Overview
Getting a new tank cycled quickly comes down largely to what's happening biologically in your substrate. CaribSea's Arag-Alive Special Grade Sand is a live aragonite substrate pre-loaded with beneficial marine bacteria, so it's already doing biological work from the moment it goes in rather than starting from zero.
Its coarser 1-2mm grain size sets it apart from finer sands - it's less prone to clouding or being kicked up by flow, while still offering plenty of surface area for bacteria to colonise.
Key features
- Live aragonite substrate seeded with millions of beneficial marine bacteria
- Helps compress new tank cycle time and suppress the initial ammonia spike
- 1.0-2.0mm grain size - coarser and more stable under flow than fine sands, while still offering good diffusive properties
- 100% aragonite, supporting natural pH buffering over time
- Ready to use straight from the bag - no rinsing required
Who it's for
Anyone setting up a new marine or reef tank who wants a head start on cycling, or established tanks topping up their existing sandbed, particularly in higher-flow systems where a coarser grain holds up better.
Setup & tips
- Live rock and most invertebrates can go in straight away; introduce fish gradually over the following few weeks rather than all at once
- No rinsing is needed - adding it straight from the bag preserves the live bacteria
- The coarser grain size is well suited to sand-sifting fish and higher-flow tanks where finer sand would be constantly stirred up
- Use a sand bed calculator based on your tank's footprint to work out how many bags you'll need for your target depth
