Overview
AF Air Scrubber Media is a CO2-absorbing pellet media designed to tackle one of the most overlooked causes of pH instability in a reef tank: the air your skimmer is pulling in. Daily fluctuations in the carbon dioxide level in the air, caused by normal breathing, pets, and cooking, can all affect the pH of the aquarium, and the higher the concentration of CO2 that the protein skimmer pulls in, the greater the acidification of the water, often resulting in a drop in pH, unstable dKH and significant inhibition of coral calcification.
The medium is a white, dry pellet that tightly fills the filter chamber of an AF Air Scrubber while still allowing air flow, resulting in efficient carbon dioxide absorption. Run through an AF Air Scrubber reactor plumbed to your skimmer's air intake, it's a simple, passive way to keep pH steadier day and night — particularly useful over autumn and winter, when windows are often closed and rooms are less ventilated.
Key features
- Excellent CO2 absorption properties, effectively raising pH levels in the tank
- Colour-changing pellet clearly indicates when it's time to replace the cartridge — turning purple once it has absorbed carbon dioxide
- Can be used together with carbon media in the same reactor for combined filtration
- According to manufacturer testing, this media can raise pH by roughly 0.2–0.4, stabilising it in the 8.0–8.4 range
- Designed for single use — the cartridge cannot be regenerated or reused
What's in the box
- One package is a full AF Air Scrubber reactor refill
Who it's for
Suits any reef keeper running (or planning to run) an AF Air Scrubber reactor on their protein skimmer, particularly if you're chasing tighter, more stable pH and dKH for demanding SPS or mixed-reef systems. Only original CO2 filter cartridges ensure uninterrupted operation and the highest efficiency, so it's best used as a genuine replacement rather than a substitute media.
Setup & tips
- Replace the media when it changes colour, or when your pH levels start to drop — don't wait for a complete colour change before swapping it out
- The base sponges should always be kept moist with RO water to keep the media performing at its best
- If used-up media is left inside the reactor too long, it can change colour again but is no longer effective at removing CO2 from the air — so don't delay the swap once it's due
- When changing out the media, it's best to wear gloves and work in a well-ventilated space
