Every reef keeper knows the quiet dread of being away from the tank. A heater that sticks on, a return pump that trips overnight, a slow leak behind the stand, an ATO that keeps topping up after the float fails — the parameters that matter most tend to drift while no one's watching. The A3 Apex Pro is the answer to that anxiety: a professional-grade controller that watches your system around the clock, acts on your rules automatically, and pings your phone the moment something looks wrong.
This is the flagship of Neptune's A3 range — the most complete monitoring and control platform in the Apex ecosystem. If you want genuine, hands-off oversight of a reef tank, this is the brain that runs it.
Why it stands out
The Pro isn't just a step up in ports — it's a step up in what you can see and trust. Neptune built this unit around feedback from the reefing community, and it shows in the details that actually prevent disasters:
- Built-in audible alarm — the base unit itself sounds an alert when a parameter goes out of range, so you're warned even before you reach for your phone.
- Four fluid monitoring (FMM) ports built in — connect leak detectors, liquid level sensors and optical sensors directly, with no separate module to buy first.
- Per-outlet power monitoring — see exactly how much each device is drawing. A return pump reading zero watts when it should be running is an early warning you'd otherwise miss.
- Lab-grade, double-junction probes included — reliable pH and ORP readings out of the box, not bargain-bin sensors.
- 1LINK integration — drive Neptune accessories like WAV pumps and the DOS dosing system through a single connection, cutting cable clutter behind the tank.
- Rubberised soft-touch finish — the same premium finish as the SKY LED, and a nice touch for a unit that lives on display.
Monitoring that does the watching for you
Out of the box, the Pro tracks the core parameters that keep a reef stable — temperature, pH and ORP — and adds two genuinely useful sensors that previous Apex bundles didn't include:
- Liquid Level Sensor (LLS) — a first-of-its-kind sensor that works like a ruler, giving real-time water-depth readings. Drop it into your sump or filtration chamber and you'll know your water level continuously — invaluable for spotting an ATO problem or evaporation creep before it becomes a flood or a dry pump.
- LD-3 Leak Detection Sensor — a reusable optical leak detector that works reliably on nearly any surface. Sit it in the cabinet under the most likely failure points and let it watch the floor while you sleep.
Need more? The four FMM ports let you add flow sensors or further optical sensors (sold separately) to suit your exact setup. And because the base unit still carries dedicated probe ports for pH/ORP, temperature and salinity, you lose none of the capability of earlier generations.
Control that's effortless to set up
The Pro pairs with an Energy Bar for full equipment control — six individually-monitored 230V outlets for our market, each with its own status LED. Beyond the AC outlets, the Energy Bar carries a built-in 100W 24V DC supply feeding three 1LINK ports (for WAV, DOS and similar) and two 24V DC accessory ports for small pumps, solenoids and fans — so a lot of your kit runs without hogging a single power point.
Everything ties together through Apex Fusion, Neptune's free, web-based cloud platform. There's nothing to keep updated — open the browser interface on Windows or macOS, or the app on iOS and Android, and you're always on the current version. Calibrate probes, build automations, set reminders and check on your tank from anywhere with an internet connection. Fusion even serves up pre-configured tasks for things like heater setup and email alerts, so you're up and running fast.
One more thing reefers love: it's backwards-compatible. Your existing Apex modules, head units, Energy Bars and accessories carry straight over.
What's in the box
- A3 Apex Pro base unit — the intelligent core of the system
- Energy Bar — smart power control with per-outlet monitoring, 1LINK and 24V DC outputs
- pH and ORP probes — lab-grade, double-junction
- Temperature probe
- Liquid Level Sensor (LLS)
- LD-3 optical Leak Detection Sensor
Who it's for
This is the controller for the reefer who's all-in. If you've invested in corals and equipment worth protecting, run a display with a sump full of life-support gear, or you simply want to stop worrying every time you leave the house, the Pro pays for itself the first time it catches a problem you'd otherwise have come home to.
It's equally at home as the centrepiece of a brand-new build or as an upgrade for an established system — your existing Apex gear comes along for the ride. Pair it with WAV pumps and a DOS over 1LINK and you've got the foundation of a fully automated, fully monitored reef.
Nearly every serious tank we set up has an Apex as its brain — there's a reason it's the most trusted controller in the hobby. The Pro is the most complete version Neptune makes, and the built-in alarm, liquid level sensor and leak detector mean it earns its keep on day one. Dry goods ship Australia-wide; questions on probes, expansion or programming, just ask — it's not just a hobby, it's an obsession.
